One day, Mikey was visiting his Uncle Pete in the country. After lunch, he decided to explore the big backyard. At first, everything felt exciting and adventurous.

But as he walked farther, the trees began to look taller. The path seemed thinner. The air grew still, and everything felt… quieter.

Too quiet.

Mikey stopped walking and turned around.

He could no longer see Uncle Pete’s red shed.

His heart began to beat a little faster.

“I’m not supposed to be this far,” he whispered.

The sun was starting to go down, and the woods were getting darker. The brave feeling he had before began to fade, and in its place came something else.

Fear.

“I wish I had a flashlight,” Mikey said softly.

Just then, something tiny tapped against his shoe.

He looked down.

Blink… blink… blink…

A small golden light flickered near his shoelace.

It was a firefly—but not just any firefly. This one glowed brighter than the rest, like a tiny floating star.

Then something wonderful happened.

The firefly stayed right there on Mikey’s shoe. Its warm light spread gently over his toes and onto the ground in front of him.

The strange thing was, the light didn’t shine on the whole woods.
It didn’t reach the tops of the trees.

It only lit up his very next step.

Mikey took one careful step forward.

The ground shimmered softly, as if tiny sparkles had been hiding in the grass, waiting to appear. Another step—and more light joined in.

Soon, more fireflies floated around him. They drifted gently through the air like tiny stars that had come down from the sky.

Mikey took a slow breath.

He realized he wasn’t alone.

Deep in his heart, he knew God was watching over him. God hadn’t lit up the whole woods—but He had given Mikey just enough light to keep going.

Step by step…

The glowing path led him through the trees, past the tall grass, and closer to the warm glow of the porch light at Uncle Pete’s house.

With each step, his fear grew smaller.

With each step, his courage grew stronger.

Finally, he reached the porch. The little firefly on his shoe—and all the others—rose gently into the evening sky, disappearing like fading stars.

Mikey looked down at his sneakers one last time and then ran onto the porch where Uncle Pete was sitting.

Breathless, he told Uncle Pete everything.

Uncle Pete smiled and said gently:
“Mikey, even when you feel lost… even when it gets dark… God doesn’t always light up the whole woods. He lights up your next step. Psalm 119:105 says, ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.’ And that is enough.”

Bible Verse

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

 Imagination Activity:

Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine you are in the woods or backyard, and it's very quiet. It’s starting to get dark.

Now, picture a tiny firefly glowing near your feet. It doesn’t light up everything—just enough for your next step.

How does it feel to take one step at a time with the firefly lighting your way?

Take one slow step… then another. Feel the courage growing with each step.

Remember: God lights your next step, even when the rest of the path is dark.
